Photography Tutorial: How to Photograph Starfish and Other Sea Creatures
Recommended Camera Gear: Polarizing Filter
Unlike many land mammals, reptiles, and other creatures you may photograph, many sea creatures are not as fast-moving and are easier to photograph under low light conditions. Another difference is their location when filming. Many sea creatures are sitting just below the surface of the water, in tide pools, or surrounded by shallow surf. That is why a polarizing filter is an essential piece of camera equipment you’ll need for filming sea creatures. A polarizing filter visually removes reflections from water. When photographing underwater sea creatures, this means that any glare or reflection on the surface of the water will disappear with a polarizer. That way, you can focus on the creatures in or surrounded by water without visual distractions in your image.
More about Polarizing Filters for Water and Sky
Polarizing filters do more than remove glare and reflection from the surface of water. They can be used to change the polarized effect of light off of any reflective surface, or to darken the appearance of the sky. If you are photographing sea creatures in tide pools, a polarizing filter can remove glare and reflection from the surface of the water. This gives you a clear view of whatever lies beneath the surface. But the filter will also remove polarized light from the sky, darkening its appearance in your photo. That’s why a polarizer is the most important piece of equipment when photographing sea creatures, ocean scenes, and compositions that include the sky.
